New Lexus RZ Crossover is first electric luxury crossover from Lexus

Lexus introduced its first-ever fully-electric SUV this morning with the Lexus RZ, a brand new luxury electric vehicle expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year. The RZ comes to us as the first in a long list of electrified models from Lexus and its Electrified vision announced last year.

“The RZ has been developed with the aim of creating a uniquely Lexus BEV that feels secure to ride in, is pleasing to the touch, and is exhilarating to drive. DIRECT4, the core technology of ‘Lexus Electrified,’ is (an) all-wheel-drive system that achieves quick and linear response according to driver input. We will continue to take on the challenge of providing customers with new experiences and a uniquely Lexus BEV driving experience.”

- Takashi Watanabe, chief engineer, ‘Lexus Electrified’, Lexus International

The Lexus RZ is built on the e-TNGA platform that aims to achieve the best weight distribution in the placement of the battery pack and the motors. This platform is also paired with a new DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system. This new AWD system can distribute power front to rear between 100:0 and 0:100, ensuring the best distribution for the quickest accelerations, best handling stability, and the best power efficiency.

Powered by two electric motors, the Lexus RZ develops up to 230 kW which is equivalent to 308 horsepower. The Lexus RZ features an advanced pressurization unit that coordinates front and rear regenerative braking.

Lexus hasn’t confirmed range just yet, but expect roughly 360 kilometres from the 71.4 kWh battery.

More details including pricing and charging times will be announced later.
